Background Post 7. Paul's Second Missionary Journey

This was set as about AD 49.
In Acts 15:40 Paul and Silas set out from Antioch in Syria. In Acts 16:1-3 Timothy joins them.
They attempted to go into Asia and Bithynia but were redirected to Macedonia by the Spirit of God.

 Act 16:8  So, passing along Mysia, they came to Troas.
Act 16:9  Here, one night, Paul saw a vision. There was a Macedonian who was standing, entreating him and saying, "Come over into Macedonia and help us."
Act 16:10  So when he had seen the vision, we immediately looked out for an opportunity of passing on into Macedonia, confidently inferring that God had called us to proclaim the Good News to the people there.
Act 16:11  Accordingly we put out to sea from Troas, and ran a straight course to Samothrace. The next day we came to Neapolis,
Act 16:12  and thence to Philippi, which is a city in Macedonia, the first in its district, a Roman colony. And there we stayed some little time.

The first Sabbath they went down by the river where there was a place of prayer. Lydia was converted as the Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. They were invited to stay at her house.

After being abused and cast into prison for delivering a young medium from demon - possession, that night there was a terrible earthquake. The Jailor was converted and they left Philippi and walked the 4 days to Thessaloniki. [144kms.]
Image result for picture of paul and silas tent makingThey modeled manual labour working to support themselves.1 Thess2:9, 2 Thess 3:6-9 They made tents in the marketplace. The believers at Philippi sent some support to them. Phil 4:16.

Jason their host in Thessaloniki was dragged before the Civil Authorities by their Jewish opponents. 
Act 17:5  But the jealousy of the Jews was aroused, and, calling to their aid some ill-conditioned and idle fellows, they got together a riotous mob and filled the city with uproar. They then attacked the house of Jason and searched for Paul and Silas, to bring them out before the assembly of people. 
Act 17:6  But, failing to find them, they dragged Jason and some of the other brethren before the magistrates of the city, loudly accusing them. "These men," they said, "who have raised a tumult throughout the Empire, have come here also.

1 Thess 2:7 On the contrary, in our relations to you we showed ourselves as gentle as a mother is when she tenderly nurses her own children W.N.T. 1Th 2:7  even though as apostles of Christ we could have made demands on you. But we were gentle when we were with you, like a mother taking care of her children. Background to 1 Thessalonians

     Read Acts 17 (1-9) Paul and Silas's  First Visit to Thessalonica. The Bustling City Today. The Thessalonians were Pagans. Paul and Silas arrived in Thessaloniki after walking about 144 kms from Philip-pi where they had been abused, bashed and imprisoned unjustly. They preached the Good News of Jesus there for just three weeks and left  a church in the homes of Jason, Aristarchus and Secundus. Thessalonica was the Provincial Capital of Macedonia.
