Explanation of the Text 1 Thess 5 20. Treating Prophecies with Contempt.
1Th 5:20 Do not despise prophecies. ISV; 1Th 5:20 Don't despise what God has revealed. GW
Do not think meanly of utterances of prophecy; WNT Do not treat prophecies with contempt NIV.
To despise means you treat of little esteem or importance, you set at nought. Stop counting as nothing.
PROPHESYING means Inspired Utterances or Revelations of the Mind and Will of God.
According to Thayer's Greek Definitions [propheteia] means a discourse emanating from Divine inspiration which declares the Purposes of God whether reproving, admonishing, the wicked, revealing the hidden things or Foretelling future events especially about Christ's kingdom.
1Co 12:28 And by God's appointment there are in the Church--first Apostles, secondly Prophets, thirdly teachers. Then come miraculous powers, and then ability to cure diseases or render loving service, or powers of organization, or varieties of the gift of 'tongues.'
1Co 12:29 Are all Apostles? Are all Prophets? Are all teachers?
1Co 12:30 Have all miraculous powers? Have all ability to cure diseases? Do all speak in 'tongues'? Do all interpret?
1Co 12:31 But always seek to excel in the greater gifts.
1Co 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh to men unto edification and exhortation and comfort.
1Co 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not or an unlearned person, he is convinced of all: he is judged of all.
1Co 14:25 The secrets of his heart are made manifest. And so, falling down on his face, he will adore God, affirming that God is among you indeed.
In Acts 6 Peter spoke to Ananias and Sapphira by the powerof the Holy Spirit and revealed their lies and their deception.
DO TONGUES AND PROPHECY BECOME INOPERATIVE OR ARE THEY MADE IDLE.
Yes, but when??????????
1Co 13:8 Love never fails. But if there are prophecies, they will be done away with; if there are languages (tongues), they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be brought to an end.
1Co 13:9 For our knowledge is imperfect, and so is our prophesying;
1Co 13:10 but when the perfect state of things is come, all that is imperfect will be brought to an end. WNT
When will the perfect State come? (KJV When that which is perfect is come.)
Barnes Notes on the NT 'in heaven' the state of absolute perfection, then all imperfection will vanish away.
A. Clark, "whenthe state of eternal blessedness" arrives.
J. Gill "not in this life". PNT says The perfection which is expected at the Second Coming of Christ.
Only then will all imperfection vanish. All the in part and what is obscure will be lost in the superior light and Glory of that Eternal World where Christ shall reign.
Illustration. The Lesser lights of the stars vanish when the great light of the sun and moon are shining.
Some falsely claim that this refers to the completion of the Canon of Scripture. This is found nowhere in Scripture. ALL THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT CONTINUE UNTIL JESUS COMES IN GLORY.
See the lists in 1 Cor. 12 and Romans 12 :6-8
We are living in the Day of the Holy Spirit Outpouring which began at Pentecost.
