Explanation of the Text. 1 Thess 5:21-22 Test/Hold/ Avoid

1Th 5:21  Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good.
1Th 5:22  Keep away from every kind of evil.
....................................................................................................
Test everything :  That means prove or approve; subject everything that has been submitted to you to be believed, eg. prophecies; to the proper test.
test : [dokimazete] applied to metals is the art of an assayer by which the true nature or value of a metal is tested.

1Co 3:13  The day will make what each one does clearly visible because fire will reveal it. That fire will determine what kind of work each person has done.
1Co 3:14  If what a person has built survives, he will receive a reward.
1Co 3:15  If his work is burned up, he will suffer the loss. However, he will be saved, though it will be like going through a fire.
The day of Christ is soon to come where every man's work will be tested by fire.
Therefore, we are to carefully to examine everything proposed for us to believe. Embrace only what is found to be true.
Hold on to what is good.  i.e. in accordance with reason and justice and the Word of God. It will always promote Salvation and the welfare of Believers.

1Th 5:22  Keep away from every kind of evil.

Hold yourself aloof from every form of evil. WNT.
Abstain from all appearance of evil. If it seems to be wrong stay right away from it.

Stay away from all evil because false revelation can come in many different forms; i.e. through fake prophecies from some evil spirit or a false messenger
2Th 2:11  That's why God will send them a powerful delusion so that they will believe a lie.
2Th 2:12  Then everyone who did not believe the truth, but was delighted with what God disapproves of, will be condemned.

The Prophetic Gift
  1. It is a great benefit to the church 1 Cor 14:3,5,26
  2. It must not be stifled or despised 1 Thess 5:9-10
  3. It must not be drowned out by the noise of another. 1 Cor 14: 30-31
  4. Its content must be discerned or judged  1 Cor 14:29; 1 Thess 5:20-22
The main problem in the churches today is to accept Prophetic utterances as a message from God that must not be questioned or in any way put to the test.  This is false.
The People of God must discern or distinguish whatever purports to be a message from God.
