Explanation of the Text: 1Thess. 5:9-10 Not Chosen for Punishment but LIFE.

1Th 5:9  For God has not pre-destined us to meet His anger, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ;
1Th 5:10  who died on our behalf, so that whether we are awake or are sleeping we may share His Life.
................................................................................................................................................................
Notes:
In the previous verse we saw that we are in a battle with a real Enemy. Despite that we have a sure and certain Expectation of our Salvation which keeps us sain in the midst of the Battle. Faith and Love inspire us to Enterprising Courage despite the difficulties.

  • For God has not pre-destined us to meet His anger,  Some were appointed (predestined) or marked out for PUNISHMENT. This is all marked out according to the Sovereignty of God and His everlasting Purpose of Love. 1Th 3:3  that none of you might be unnerved by your present trials: for you yourselves know that they are our appointed lot. 1Th 3:4  For even when we were with you, we forewarned you, saying, "We are soon to suffer affliction;" and this actually happened, as you well know.  2Th 1:9  They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, being banished from the presence of the Lord and from His glorious majesty, Rom 9:22  And what if God, while choosing to make manifest the terrors of His anger and to show what is possible with Him, has yet borne with long-forbearing patience with the subjects of His anger who stand ready for destructionRom 9:23  in order to make known His infinite goodness towards the subjects of His mercy whom He has prepared beforehand for glory, Rom 9:24  even towards us whom He has called not only from among the Jews but also from among the Gentiles? Jude 1:4  For certain persons have crept in unnoticed--men spoken of in ancient writings as pre-destined to this condemnation--ungodly men, who pervert the grace of our God into an excuse for immorality, and disown Jesus Christ, our only Sovereign and Lord.
         To meet God's Anger means: His wrath or Indignation, His Vengeance or Punishment.

  • But to Obtain Salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. Notes :Obtain speaks of purchase, or acquisition or receiving or possession. So one is Predestined to Obtain or Receive Salvation - This the acquisition of Salvation. It is like being saved out of a wreck of a car or ship when everybody else and everything else is lost.  " So the Elect or the Chosen are saved out of the Multitude of the Lost."2Th 2:13  And from us thanks are always due to God on your behalf--brethren whom the Lord loves--because God from the beginning has chosen you for salvation through the Spirit's sanctifying influence and your belief in the truth. 2Th 2:14  To this blessing God has called you by our Good News, so that you may have a share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • To this blessing God has called you by our Good News,., Gospel Proclamation is the Divine call. In the Congo the Village Kapita would walk through the village at 5am announcing the Coming of the Administrateur de Territoire with a loud voice that all could hear.  The Church need s to proclaim the Gospel of our Lord Jesus publically in our day.
  • so that whether we are awake or are sleeping we may share His Life.  The result of being Called by God through the Gospel is to share His Life and His Glory.
